Whales and wails

I have just signed the Avaaz petition on stopping whaling.

But, noticing that it’s pulled stronger and swifter support than many of their human rights petitions, I do wish we human beings would spread our compassion a little more evenly.

I really cannot understand why the life of a whale should be more important than the life of a cow.

Of course, there are issues of extinction and biodiversity. But much of the anger against whaling seems to spring from a rather shallow desire for a well-decorated world in which David Attenborough is able to continue in business.

Start with suffering, though, and the world looks very similar for whales and cows and, perhaps, Bangladeshi children, amongst whom drowning is now a leading cause of death, as climate change and sea level rise begins to take its toll.
