Information wants to be freer

Originally, in the US, copyright lasted only 14 years, which could be extended to 28 years. Copyright only came with registration. But as capital’s relentless drive to create new and extend existing classes of property and ownership has proceeded, so copyright has become automatic, and been extended no less than 11 times, now standing at 70 years. “These extensions to copyright have been implemented on behalf of giant media companies to protect a tiny number of very valuable works. However, the effect has been to deprive the public of the vast majority of works to which they should be legally entitled.”
Hence, the efforts of the Creative Commons group, which allows authors and creators to specifically opt for the original 14/28 year copyright on their published works.
It allows authors and publishers to release works for 14 or 28-year terms, as originally intended in the US in 1790.
